Facing each other across the St. Marys River are the Ontario and Michigan cities of Sault Ste. Marie. The river's rapids were discovered by Etienne Brulé in 1622, and the first permanent mission was founded by Père Marquette in 1669. Many eminent Jesuits were stationed at the mission until its abandonment in 1689. A French military post was established in 1750; it was garrisoned until the British took it over in 1762. The settlement was an important fur-trading post until 1842.

NATIONAL PARKBruce Peninsula National Park Along both sides of the Bruce Peninsula, the park encompasses 155 square kilometres (60 sq. mi.). Bruce Peninsula National Park preserves one of the last remaining wild areas in southwestern Ontario; it is the core of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve. The backbone of the park is a portion of the Niagara Escarpment, a 725-kilometre (451-mi.) ridge that extends from Queenston Heights on the Niagara River to Tobermory.

The Chequamegon (she-Wa-ma-gon) area covers 856,938 acres east, south and northwest of Park Falls on SRs 182 and 13; the Nicolet (nik-oh-LAY) area totals 661,200 acres east of Rhinelander and is accessible via several major highways.

NATIONAL PARKGeorgian Bay Islands National Park is the park's largest island. Trails traverse the island, emerging from park campgrounds, picnic and docking areas. From the walking trails visitors can see various rare species of wildlife, a variety of birds, spectacular landscapes, precious habitats and evidence of the historical past. Summer recreational activities include fishing, hiking, swimming, bicycling, boating, kayaking and canoeing.
NATIONAL PARKGrand Portage National Monument A half-mile from the village of Grand Portage off SR 61, the scenic historical site of Grand Portage National Monument embraces the stockade and the 8.5-mile portage—a foot path used to carry boats and supplies from Lake Superior to the Pigeon River—followed by the voyageurs to Fort Charlotte and the boundary waters separating Canada and Minnesota. The Grand Portage was the fur trade's linchpin—through this portage passed all the trade goods from Montréal and furs from the Canadian Northwest.
NATIONAL PARKHiawatha National Forest With shorelines on lakes Huron, Michigan and Superior, the two portions of the Hiawatha National Forest embrace 893,348 acres of the Upper Peninsula and feature the only Great Lakes lighthouses in the national forest system.
